Lol... so i tried to play .. with myself on LAN. Just to try if it works and stuff. and i have a question.. is it normal that if u make a dedicated server- u will have ping above 0 and the other pc will be 0 ? cos when i make it a listen (right?) server, then both pc's have 0 ping. And that connection u can choose in settings, like LAN/T1 or ISDN or adsl whatever, does it matter with lan? , i mean i tried all of them - lol , and the only difference is that i have 4 ping when i turn it on 'modem ' lol
any comments, tips whatever lol , i would like to hear it all ;)
and btw, whats that thing under ping 'pph' i guess or something.... would like to know that lol.
if you make it dedicated you will join it remotely, tho you should have a decent ping as you are connecting back into your own network, if you make a "listen" server it's hosting from the actual game you are playing, hence you will have a ping of 0 but anyone joining will have normal ping (depending on your isp's upload speed)
dedicated my pc '1' is the one i hosted the server on. when i join that server i have around 14 ping. when i join thesame server on pc '2' i will have 0 ping - lol
and ' listen ' pc 1 0 ping and pc 2 also 0 ping lol not really something i call a normal ping chris :P :)
and pph means points per hour? ... cos sometimes i have 999 and sometimes 0 lol... and mostly around 15 i think... and i can get 15 points in 10 mins lol bit of lame tho :/
and one more thing, is it normal that i can host lan servers and cannot internet ones? lol. i mean.. both are thru my router ... lan works , net does not :P
For some reason, Allot of people find it hard to host an internet server that allow people to see it.
I have no issue with this, but lot's of others do.
Re-check all your setting's, the one to look for from memeory is advertise server, this needs to be checked, otherwise no-one will ever see it.
good luck mate, but unless your trying to play with a perticular player, and he lives local to you, there is no point in hosting a game.
your advantage will be huge, as you have 0 ping, whilst your friend could have upto 100 ping, which would give you a good advantage.. but as ogs says, it's down to the other players isp, and upload speed.

ah, your only playing via lan, not having others join at all ? thats why the ping is so low on the other pc's, tho, the pc doing the serving should allways have 0 ping on a listen server, whilst the other pc's on the lan network will have very very low ping, they still have the physical distance hence any ping at all (or at least thats how it should work lols)
as for serving an internet match, it again depends on your isp, + the type of internet you have & the router.
if you have cable internet & use only a modem with no router, then it'll pretty much allways work fine with no twidling needed, but if you either have an adsl provider, or run your connection through a router then you will probably have a built in hardware firewall, to get past this log into the routers setup page & set up port forewarding, or alternatively disable the security settings (only the lan settings, not the wifi settings, leave your network join code on obviously :p)
here a link for port forewarding advice. http://portforward.com/routers.htm this sites been around ages, & it's a goldmine of info for what your doing :)
well ... i opened some ports once... for emule. lol but tho... disabling lan settings won't let me hoston internet, will it ? lol and 'set up port forewarding' i need to know which ones, right? :/
... honestly... i'm such an internet noob lol.. i can write a program, make a game but i can't do anything with internet... 'yay' -_- lol
but thanks for all :)
and something else, when pc's are connected with lan, can u get acces to the harddrive of the other pc ?
disabling lan settings won't let me hoston internet
i only mean disable the lan Security settings, this will turn of the hardware firewall etc, but your pc's firewall will still be on & protecting the pc :)
